Adult Yoga with Sheila Armstrong

Join us this evening for a one-hour gentle yoga class with instructor Sheila Armstrong. We will practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to be present in the current moment and to create more space in our minds and bodies. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, a water bottle, and anything else that might make you more comfortable during class (i.e., towel or blanket). This program is suitable for ages 13 and up. Sheila is a 200-hour registered yoga instructor and a certified Reiki healer residing in Milton. Her love of yoga started in the late 1990s when she was looking for a way to get grounded after finishing college and starting a new job as a middle school teacher. She believes that anyone can benefit from the calm and presence gained while practicing yoga and hopes to help people take these benefits with them into their lives off the mat as well. Friends of the Blue Hills: Effective Communication of Leave No Trace Workshop

Effective Communication of Leave No Trace This workshop is designed for agency employees, partners, volunteers, and others who educate and interface with the public in a formal capacity or work on messaging and communications for a site. Participants will learn tips, tools, and best practices to effectively communicate the hows and whys behind Leave No Trace. The audience for this workshop will include staff and key partners who regularly engage with the public through education, recreation, stewardship, and outdoor programming. Participants represent a wide range of organizations and programs connected to the Blue Hills and surrounding communities. The Blue Hills experiences a variety of visitor impacts, including trash, invasive species, social and rogue trails, and dog waste. The area supports many recreational uses such as hiking, mountain biking, running, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, nature journaling, school programs, picnicking, and visits from large family and school groups.

Kid Lit Kit Meetup, Ages 9-12*

Looking for a new book club for ages 9-12? Register for the Kid Lit Kit Meetup and receive your kit today! August's theme: Tales of Trails.  On the first of each month, ten themed kits will be available for pickup. Each kit will contain a library book on that month's theme, along with activities and swag. Read the book over the course of the month; at the end of the month, meet for a book discussion with Ms. Tory and return your book. The swag is yours to keep! Only registered participants will receive a Kid Lit Kit and be able to attend the meeting. Registration is required and is limited to ten participants ages 9-12. This program will take place in the Story Hour Room, and registration will open  4 weeks in advance. Kits will be available starting on the first of the month. Discover the gripping, true, and untold history of the Italian anti-fascist resistance during World War II, told through the stories of four spectacularly courageous women fighters. MPL Lit Kit for Adults

Register to receive one of this month's MPL Lit Kits! September's theme: Channel Surfing. Here's how it works: On the first of each month, ten themed kits will be available for pickup. Each kit will be packaged in a plastic bin, and will contain two library books on that month's theme, along with activities and swag provided by the Friends of the MPL. Read the books over the course of the month; at the end of the month, return the bin and the books. The swag is yours to keep! While the group will not meet in person, we'll have an optional Goodreads discussion group available for those who would like to interact online with their fellow readers, moderated by Assistant Director, Sara Truog. Registration is required and is limited to ten participants. Registrants must be adults who have an active library card in the OCLN system. Participants may register for up to three kits per year, so as to allow more people to be able to participate. She is a member of the Sharon (MA) Photography Club and has recently been enjoying pictures of nature. She believes that picking up a camera and photographing the natural world is a fun way to spend time. Yarn donations will be accepted during today's Knitting Group meeting! Stop by the Conference Room on the Lower Level to drop off any unused whole skeins of yarn with labels. An informal drop-in knitting group  will meet at the library which offers an opportunity for people to get together, bring a project to work on, and have others nearby for occasional advice. Knitters and all other fiber artists are invited to attend. Please note that  this is not a knitting class for beginners , but instead an opportunity to share current projects with others and to learn tips and tricks at the same time. "Year of the Water Horse": Author and Journalist Janice Page in Conversation with Boston Globe Columnist Shirley Leung

With Shirley guiding the conversation, Janice will talk about her recently published memoir, “Year of the Water Horse,” which chronicles a journey that began in Braintree, where she grew up in a middle-class family and landed a part-time job as a teenager in a local Chinese restaurant that changed her life. A New York Times Editors’ Choice, “Year of the Water Horse” is a warm and witty memoir about the ever-changing relationships between mothers, mothers-in-law, and daughters that traverses two continents and multiple generations of two very different, yet connected families. Janice and Shirley will discuss the book’s themes of abandonment, loss, and survival, and the journalist point-of-view that this author brings to her book. Former colleagues, the two will also discuss the state of journalism and publishing in today’s highly charged and complicated era for news professionals. Janice Page  was arts editor at  The Washington Post . Prior to that, Page was a deputy managing editor at  The Boston Globe , where she oversaw publication of books done in partnership with  The  Globe , including  The  New York Times  best-sellers  Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy  and  Whitey Bulger: America’s Most Wanted Gangster and the Manhunt That Brought Him to Justice  and multiple championship sports books on the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins. She has also been on staff at  The Los Angeles Times ,  The Providence Journal-Bulletin  and written for  The New York Times  and  MSN . A Boston-area native, Janice graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude from Rutgers University and was named the 2023 recipient of the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Residency at Yaddo, where she worked on  Year of the Water Horse . Shirley Leung is a Boston Globe business columnist and associate editor, and host of Globe Opinion podcast “Say More.” For more than a decade, Shirley has been writing on the intersection of business and politics, as well as gender and diversity issues in the workplace. She is also a weekly contributor to GBH’s “Boston Public Radio” and sits on the board of the New England First Amendment Coalition. Shirley lives in Milton. Chair Yoga with Marianne Zullas

Join us this afternoon for a one-hour Chair Yoga class with instructor Marianne Zullas.  Chair yoga is a beneficial practice for teenagers, adults, seniors, individuals in wheelchairs, or those with physical disabilities and medical concerns. Chair yoga increases core strength, improves mobility and flexibility, reduces stress, and aids mental clarity. It is also a great way to establish community. Marianne Zullas is a Trauma Sensitive yoga certified, Accessible/Chair yoga certified, and Sound Healing certified, registered 500-hour Yoga teacher and Reiki Practitioner.  She is also the founder of MZ Yoga Connections, an independent, traveling yoga studio. The mind and body connection has been a passion of Marianne's since childhood. Her goal is to offer her students the opportunity to dissociate from the distractions of overburdened thinking in order to be present in the moment. She wants to learn about each of her students, including their cultures, their backgrounds, and their stories, so she can better help them on their personal yoga journeys.  During her free time, Marianne loves to spend time with her family, cook healthy meals, walk in nature, act, and write. Pick up a craft supply bag  on Friday, September 11 between 9am and 5pm ,  and make it together whenever you like! This month, we will make: Apple Worm Lacing. This is a first-come, first-serve activity. No registration is required. Join us on Tuesday, September 15 for a-choose-your-own-book book club! Bring whichever mystery novel you're currently reading for a fun evening of reading and chatting. We'll start by sharing which books we're all reading and what we think of them so far, then spend the last part of the book club in silent reading.

Calling all builders! Join Ms. Tory at LEGO Club in the Story Hour Room. Construct a themed LEGO scene, and then find your finished creations on display in the Children's Room! For ages 6-12. Registration for this in-person session is required and limited and will open two weeks before the event.

"Reading the Revolution" Book Discussion: Chicano and Latinx Civil Rights

The MPL is holding a series of book discussions around the initiative  MA250 Reading the Revolution: 250 Years of Incendiary and Inspiring Books from the Bay State and Beyond . In advance of this session, participants will select and read a book from the Chicano and Latinx Civil Rights reading list .   When we get together, we will each get a chance to tell the group about the book we are reading, and discuss the range of perspectives on the revolutionary era and beyond. The  Massachusetts Center for the Book (MCB)  and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) are pleased to share the Reading the Revolution booklists. This multipart reading list honors the complex history of the American Revolution and our nation's unfolding evolution toward becoming a society where everyone is truly "free and equal." The reading lists feature recommendations from libraries across the Commonwealth. Registration is required and will open three weeks before the event.

Read what the celebrities are reading: join Celebrity Book Club! Library staff members Regan Mulcahy & Sally Lawler will lead you in a fun, relaxed discussion of books recommended by popular celebrities (note: sadly, they are unlikely to attend our meetings). Tai Chi

Join us for a mindful hour of Tai Chi with Vince Jornales. No prior experience is required. Tai Chi is a meditative form of exercise composed of gentle, slow movements that promote harmony between body and mind. This practice offers numerous health benefits, including improved strength, flexibility, and balance; enhanced memory, focus, and sleep; reduced blood pressure; fall prevention; and decreased stress and anxiety. It is also especially beneficial for individuals with arthritis. Registration is required and limited and will open 3 weeks prior to the event. Concert: The Hot Tamale Brass Band

Join us for a music event for all ages! The Hot Tamale Brass Band takes their audience on an exciting excursion into New Orleans jazz, festive Mardi Gras, funky second line parades, and traditional Dixieland jazz. Kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Reading Dogs, Grades 1-5*

Kids in Grades 1-5 who want to practice reading aloud are invited to come meet and read to a lovable (and a very good listener!) volunteer dog.  Each child will have the opportunity to read to the dog in a private session for ten minutes to practice reading skills. Registration is required and limited, and will open two weeks before the event.
