250th Anniversary Of American Beer--Colonial Beer Program

To mark America's 250th Anniversary, illustrator, author and Advanced Cicerone Em Sauter will give an illustrated presentation discussing the role of beer and brewing in American history. Starting from the Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock (because they were out of beer!) to the modern craft brewery movement and the beers we love today, beer has been woven through the fabric of American history. T his event is a collaboration between the Agawam Public library and the Agawam Municipal Golf Course and will be held at the golf course . Beer samples will be available. Bio: Em Sauter is an award-winning cartoonist, international beer judge, Advanced Cicerone, public speaker and founder of  Pints and Panels, a website she launched in 2010 to focus on visual drinks education. A Connecticut resident, Em has authored four books on beer and is currently working on a fifth book about whiskey. This program is sponsored by the  Agawam Center Library Association.

Virtual Author Talk: When Trees Testify: Reclaiming America's Black Botanical Legacy with Beronda Montgomery

Join us for a riveting conversation with award-winning biologist Beronda Montgomery as we discuss her book,  When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy.  The histories of trees in America are also the histories of Black Americans. Pecan trees were domesticated by an enslaved African named Antoine; sycamore trees were both havens and signposts for people trying to escape enslavement; poplar trees are historically associated with lynching; and willow bark has offered the gift of medicine. These trees, and others, testify not only to the complexity of the Black American narrative but also to a heritage of Black botanical expertise that, like Native American traditions, predates the United States entirely. In  When Trees Testify , award-winning plant biologist Beronda L. Montgomery explores the ways seven trees, as well as the cotton shrub, are intertwined with Black history and culture. She reveals how knowledge surrounding these trees has shaped America since the very beginning. As Montgomery shows, trees are material witnesses to the lives of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Combining the wisdom of science and history with stories from her own path to botany, Montgomery talks to majestic trees, and in this unique and compelling narrative, they answer. Montgomery, PhD, is a writer, researcher, and scholar who pursues a common theme of understanding how individuals perceive, respond to, and are impacted by the environments in which they exist. Her primary laboratory-based research has been focused on the responses of photosynthetic organisms (i.e., plants and cyanobacteria) to external light cues. Additionally, Beronda pursues this theme in the context of effective mentoring and leadership of individuals, and the role of innovative leaders in supporting success. Beronda is author of two books  When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy  (2026, Henry Holt and Co.) and  Lessons From Plants  (2021, Harvard University Press).

Silent Book Club

If you've been needing a place to get away and read for a bit, look no further than our Silent Book Club! Participants will join us for an hour and a half of quiet reading, as a way to get away from the hectic outside world. 6 PM - 6:30 PM will be optional socialization time, and reading will run from 6:30 PM - 8 PM. Optional socialization time will also be available from 8 PM - 8:30 PM. Whether you'd like to join us to talk with others about your reading or just want to come in for the reading time, all are welcome! Registration is preferred for headcount but not required.

On this 25th anniversary of the event, join the Agawam Public Library in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum for a film commemorating the anniversary. The program includes a  30-minute film highlighting first-person accounts of the attacks and their aftermath and a  live chat with Museum staff  throughout the day. We will show the commemorative film at two different times, followed by a discussion, allowing attendees to reflect upon the tragic events that took place.

APL Walking Group

Have you been looking for ways to increase your daily step count?  Are you looking for other people who might want to get some fresh air and exercise? Look no further! The library is offering a walking group this fall to help get you out in nature and stay accountable for your workout. Join librarian Kristen Frost for this walking session taking place at Still Brook Park in Feeding Hills for a morning session of movement and motion. Get your blood pumping and start the day off right! Registration is required so we know how many walkers to expect. Join our group today! We will meet at the playscape parking area at Still Brook Park at 9:00 am (100 Pine Street, Feeding Hills). Please note that this group will meet monthly through December and will meet at different locations in Agawam/Feeding Hills.

SwordFit Health with Martin Lee

Arrrrr, mateys! Unleash your inner pirate with some swashbuckling sword fighting at the library! In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day (coming up on September 19th), come work on your fitness the way a pirate would. Led by instructor Martin Lee, SwordFit Health is full-body fitness through functional swordsmanship. Participants will practice guard positions, offensive and defensive movements, followed by a cool down with stretching. Padded and wooden swords are used for the exercise with light contact for demonstration. The fitness movements will be done with wooden or polypropylene swords. Alternately, lighter foam swords can also be used. Experience is not needed, just an eagerness and enthusiasm to embrace this unique fitness offering. Avast ye! Don't be a landlubber, lest we must make you walk the plank! Grab a sword and join in the fun! Registration required. This program is sponsored by the Agawam Center Library Association.

Writers Group

The Agawam Library Writers Group is hosted by award-winning author Katherine Anderson. This in-person workshop is open to writers of all levels and genres. There will be opportunities for peer and host feedback, learning the basics of self-publishing, finding opportunities for submission to magazines, literary journals, and presses, assembling a portfolio, and the basics of a query package for submissions and publications.

Hand Embroidered Canvas Pouch Craft

Are you interested in trying your hand at embroidery but aren't sure how to begin? Why not give it a try at the library? Using an online tutorial, we will work on embroidering a canvas zipped pouch, perfect to use as a back to school pencil case or as a small carrying pouch for make up or other necessities. The library will provide the materials for this craft as we work together to learn the various hand embroidering techniques. Registration required as supplies are limited. This program is sponsored by the Agawam Center Library Association.
